More about founder, Jonathan Winchell in his own words…
JONATHAN WINCHELL
My interest from the beginning has and always been in the entertainment business. I remember from a young age that I loved TV shows and even read biographies of actors and actresses.
As a youngster, I traveled with my family and we would meet all sorts of celebrities–Telly Savalas, Paul Lynde, Craig T. Nelson, Michael Landon and football legend Jim Otto. Then thirty later my interest in entertainment led me to be the Benefactor for the Lamorinda Theatres, and Sponsor of the East Bay International Jewish Film Festival, and the California Independent Film Festival in northern California. I met more actors like Jerry Mathers, John Provost, Lou Diamond Phillips, and met Jan Wahl.
I became more involved in my community by sponsoring the Lafayette Arts Science Foundation (LASF) now known as Lafayette Partners In Education (LPIE) and organization committed to making academic excellence and innovation a reality for Lafayette’s students. I was also a sponsor of my bowling league going the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
My dad was my inspiration! He enjoyed supporting the Palm Springs Film Festival and going with my mom to all the films. In honor of my dad and continue his commitment to philanthropy, I was inspired to become involved in the East Bay Jewish Film Festival. I became a producer of a couple of feature and short films. I joined the committee and became a sponsor of the California Independent Film Festival in Moraga and Orinda and also became a sponsor of the Lamorinda Film Showcase. The festivals and philanthropy give me an opportunity to support the community, participate in the entertainment industry and enjoy films just like my dad.
My interest in entertainment includes radio as well. I was even on the radio in the early to mid 80’s and 90’s with Ken Dito, Rick Barry, and Gary Radnich, on XM radio talking about sports and at the same time I was also writing articles and editorials for my local newspaper. As a lifetime member of the California Historical Radio Society (CHRS), I was fortunate to meet the radio stars from the past and present– the legendary Hank Greenwald, Joe Starkey, Gary Gileow, James Gabbert, and Don Bleu.
Videography is like film, a way to tell a story, a personal story of a bride, a bar mitzvah, or even a business. My videography company, Winchell Productions LLC provides video services for events and commercial marketing. I sponsor the Bridal Showcase in Sacramento, Ca and represent videographers, and other presenters that I can sponsor to promote their services to the public.
To share my enthusiasm and life-long love of film I have launched a new website called FilmBlogsAreUs, I review movies, review the media and am giving the public an opportunity to share their comments and thoughts with me.
Hockey Guru Len Shapiro is a great friend. Len and I are currently working together on many fun and profitable projects and there’s never a dull moment talking to Len who was the California Golden Seals public relations director from 1974-76. He knows everyone in the entertainment business on the radio, and the writers, and sport stars and I get to meet them and hear all their stories. Len is a walking encyclopedia, my guide and my coach. He inspires me every day with his insight and professionalism.
